Judith Salomon
Trough • Cement and Porcelain, 16" x 6.5" x 2.5", 2018
Judith Salomon has exhibited in museums and galleries all over the world. She is represented in the collections of the Cleveland Museum of Art, Los Angeles Museum of Art, Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Manchester City Art Galleries in England, and the National Museum of History in Taiwan. Salomon began her ceramic career making plates, bowls and other functional work covered with brightly colored geometric shapes floating on fields of white. As her career grew Solomon began to hand build sculptures frequently incorporating rectangular sheets of ceramic in abstract architecture forms. Salomon became a master at mixing matte and high-gloss glazes often on the same piece. Many of her sculptures are functional and can be used, however, Solomon is clearly interested in form first with function taking second place. She served as the chair of the ceramics department at the Cleveland Institute of Art and retired after 37 years of teaching in 2015. She was also the recipient of the Cleveland Arts Prize in 1990.
